Information Technology Services and Residential Technology Computer Labs

  • Run Windows XP (see below for availability of Macs in ITS labs and ResTech labs)
  • Run general productivity software (e.g.) word processors and spreadsheets
  • Can be used to:
    • Change/reset passwords
    • Read/send e-mail
    • Browse the web
    • Instant Message (GAIM)
  • Have at least :
    • Two black and white laser printers in ITS labs
    • One color scanner
    • One black and white laser printer in ResTech labs
  • Front side USB access is available in all labs
  • In an effort to save paper and reduce printing costs, duplex printing (both sides of the paper) is the default setting in ITS and ResTech labs. You may opt to print single pages

NOTE: Student network drives are not backed up by ITS. You are responsible for backing up your own data and e-mail.

Most ITS and ResTech labs are wheelchair-accessible, and most labs have workstations that accommodate students who are blind or visually impaired (see Students with Disabilities).

Student attendants are on duty at all times in ITS labs.

NOTE: They DO NOT help with homework.

To use labs, students

NOTE: The ITS Lab Operations and ResTech staff reserve the right to ask users to leave the lab for non-compliance to the posted lab policies and/or any behavior disruptive to the lab environment. Non-compliant users may also be subject to disciplinary action by the NIU Judicial Office.

NOTE: No cellular phones, food, or beverages are permitted in ITS labs.

ResTech Computer Labs

All ResTech labs are open 24x7. For times when staff are on duty, special services, locations of Macintosh computers, and lab locations and phone numbers, visit: restech.niu.edu

Cyber Terminals

Available 24x7 in the lobbies of all residence halls to:

  • Use productivity software (i.e., MS Office)
  • Browse the Web
  • Access WebMail
  • Access H: drive

Non-residents of the halls may use ResTech labs but must abide by the policies prohibiting entry to the halls between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

Other Computer Labs

Some academic departments provide computer labs for restricted use by student majors or students taking certain classes within the department. Students should check with their academic adviser or their department for more information about these labs.
