Ruckus™: NIU’s Licensed Digital Entertainment Multimedia

Ruckus is a college and university community focused, advertising supported, online media company enabled by technology. ITS offers this service to legally accommodate the online entertainment requirements of our students.

Ruckus offers legal downloads for free from a catalog of nearly 2.5 million music tracks to anyone with a dot-edu e-mail address. They also have a subscription-based service that allows convenient access to a vast collection of licensed media including movies and TV shows.

Because the files are streamed on-demand from sanctioned local servers to an authenticated audience, there are no copyright violations. The files themselves reside on a local server, so access is quicker and less resource-intensive than pulling the files from external sources.
